Description: This necklace is a string of 101 faceted beads made from kauri (native New Zealand tree: Agathis australis) gum. When New Zealand's kauri gum collecting industry was at its height, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, most of the gum was exported to make varnishes and floor coverings overseas. However, it was also a popular material locally and was crafted into jewellery, keepsakes, and small decorative items.
