Dallas King of Te Marua, 6, is shown with his black-and-white cat Whisky, who took out the awards for best black-and-white kitten under 9 months and best child's pet under 9 months in the Hutt Valley Cat Club's annual show at Taita in 1965. Whisky had been saved from drowning three months previously by 12-year-old SPCA member Alan McGhie, who was riding his bike when he saw a sack containing two kittens and a cat being swept down the river under the Silverstream railway bridge.
