One of St Joseph's School's youngest pupils, Joy Gu, 5, helped plant a kauri tree in the school grounds in September 1999 to mark 100 days until 1 January 2000. Over 200 schools around the country marked the approach of the new millennium by planting a tree. Because the 100 days fell during the school holidays, many schools planted their trees the previous week.
