100,000 departures
A DigitalNZ Story by WW100 New Zealand
"Hearty cheers were given for the departing soldiers, and the National Anthem was sung. 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary,' the song which has become popular among the British troops on the Continent, was sung as the Nikau drew away from the wharf. A record of the event was preserved by a cinematograph operator, who photographed the gathering as the soldiers ascended the gangway." - 'DEPARTING NELSONIANS', Nelson Colonist, Volume LVI, Issue 13640, 1 December 1914, Page 5 (http://bit.ly/WmC08k)
