Clarendon Hotel
A DigitalNZ Story by Donna Robertson
"Celebrities and illustrious visitors like Lee Kuan Yew and the Shah of Persia drew considerable attention, though not as much as the various royal visitors. King George V1 in 1948, Queen Elizabeth in 1954 and the Queen Mother in 1958 were able to make appearances on the Worcester Street balcony to the delight of large crowds. However the greatest crowd assembled for the appearance of the Beatles who stayed here during their 1964 tour. It was events such as these which kept the Clarendon in the public eye at the time but also firmly connected it with long lasting nostalgic memories."
