RIWHTTETEI POKAI. This fime old warrior chief, one of the highest in rank in the Ngapuhi tribe, died in the Bay of Islands district during 1904, at the age of over 80 years He was a typical toa or brave of the- old school. In 1845-46 he played a conspicuous part m the Northern War waged by Hone Heke against the British troop?. He was ono of Heke's most dashing lieutenants, and distinguished himacllf just before the war began by capturing the blockhouse at the foot of the flagstaff, which crowned the hill above the town of Kororareka, now known as Russell, and cutting down the obnoxious staff. He snared in all the engagements which followed, and was wounded by a bayonet thrust at Okaihau. Pokai was related to the famous Hongi Hika, the Napoleon of North New Zealand. One of the late chief's nephews is Hone Hcke, M.H.R. (Otago Witness, 21 December 1904)
