This essay originally appeared in New Zealand Art at Te Papa (Te Papa Press, 2018). When he arrived in Christchurch in June 1890 Petrus van der Velden was a mature exponent of the late nineteenth-century Dutch romantic realist school of painting, commonly known as the Hague School. He was naturally attracted to sombre subject matter in landscape, portrait and genre studies.
