the maori at home illustrated lecture the daily life of the old-time maori was interestingly described by mr w j phillipps during the course of a lecture given in the dominion museum last night lantern slides and museum pieces amplified the speaker remarks and there was a particularly interesting film avhich illustrated the trapping and drying of eels this was taken by mr j t salmon of the museum staff on the banks of the hokio stream near levin two boys illustrated with considerable skill the string games played by the maori these string games cats cradles were excellent both for the memory and for the deftness of the fingers said mr phillipps and fpr that reason they were encouraged personally he would like to see all new zealand children playing the old maori string games the settlement by the maori of what is now wellington was described at some length by mr phillipps kupe the maori navigator entered the harbour and camped on the beaches finding plenty of fish for food somes island was later made the site of a fortified pa and later still the maori settlers moved to the miramar peninsula then an island where they lived in security in a large fpvtified pa the maori found life in new zealand more strenuous than life in the polynesian islands whence they had come and tjius they developed into a more virile and progressive race
