Rossiter, Gay

Opera star Dame Malvina Major wore this two-piece black velvet concert gown when she played Rosalinde in a Hamilton Operatic Society production of Johann Strauss's Die Fledermaus. The gown was designed by Gay Rossiter, the wardrobe mistress of the Hamilton Operatic Society. Rosalinde attends a ball masquerading as a Hungarian countess. Even her own husband doesn't recognise her, and flirts outrageously with her. The next day, when he criticises Rosalinde for dining with one of her old flames, she retaliates by revealing that she was the Hungarian countess he made advances to. The couple forgive each other, and romance is restored. Performing the part of Rosalinde is a highlight of Dame Major's work. Dame Malvina also wore this gown at Convent Garden, London for the 1990 New Zealand Sesqui concert, and at Expo ‘92 in Seville, Spain.
