Description

Michael Joseph Savage, Prime Minister of New Zealand, died in office and his body was transported by train to Auckland for burial. It stopped in Palmerston North for 50 minutes on March 30th 1940. At the station the mortuary van was opened on both sides for people to pay their respects, and then remained opened as the train slowly drew through The Square, stopping briefly at the band rotunda, and down Main Street East. This photograph was taken from a flat at 487 Main Street.
