philosophical society the historical section of the wellington philosophical society met at tho dominion museum last evening mr lolsclo best presided mr j c andersen read a second paper on maori string games information recorded having been obtain cd at and about rotcj-iii during april and may at the great maori gathering x welcome the prince of wales eighteen now figures were obtained there but upmost every day he said made it oyideru that a gathering of this kind whilst it brought many maoris together was noi the bast for obtaining ethnological information and ho indicated that there wore possibilities of obtaining important additional data by special inquiry later mr andersen compared some of the figures with figures from other parts of tho worlc one known in britain as the leashing of loeliiel doge is known-hi the cacise among the american indians and now it has been obtained from the maori on first thoughts these similar figures might suggest an identity of origin but the absolutely different means employed in producing them suggest another idea that is the human mind working in different places on the same material in this instance a loop of string is likely to arrive at the same or similar jcsult however different tho method over sixty names of figures have bsoa collected chiefly by mr eleclon best aid mr anderson has secured and recordedtho working out of between twenty-livo and thirty of these and it is hoped that some at least of the remainder arid others whose names have not yet been secured may be learned before the older people who still know them havfc passed away mr h baillie read a further paper on the early history of tho new zealand navy
