August 1969

The newly opened Villa Maria Wineshop on the corner of Yates Road and Massey Road, Mangere East, August 1969. The manageress Mrs Skilton is behind the counter. Note the display of flagons of sherry and fortified wine. This photograph was published in the South Auckland Courier Central Edition, 20 August 1969, p. 26 ("A new wine shop opened recently in Mangere East, is sure to prove a valuable amenity to the people of the area. The licence to operate the shop, Villa Maria Wines Ltd, was the subject of a two-year tussle, with several applicants from out of the South Auckland area. The licence was finally awarded to Mr George Fistonich, a Mangere businessman whose family have been in the wine trade for five generations ... The Villa Maria wine shop will carry all of New Zealand's top brand names, and a selection of liqueurs. Patrons will be able to buy the usual 'quart' size, half gallon jars, or the smaller 'half' bottles. Free samples will be given to those who enjoy tasting various brands.")
