Description

Major Gustavus von Tempsky of the Forest Rangers, at the moment of his death at the hands of Maori in the bush at Te-Ngutu-o-te-Manu, South Taranaki, on 7 September, 1868. Von Tempsky is falling backwards, sword in hand, in the centre of the view, surrounded by bodies. There are other soldiers and Maori in and around the trees and undergrowth.
