Standing portrait of Mai, or Omai, draped in flowing robes, in classical pose. Mai, or Omai, from Raiatea in the Society Islands, was the first Polynesian to visit Britain. He travelled there from Raiatea in 1774 aboard the "Adventure", Captain Tobias Furneaux, from Cook's second voyage. During his visit to England his portrait was painted by Reynolds, William Hodges and Nathaniel Dance Holland. He returned with Cook to the Society Islands in 1777.
