This is the best description of this item that we could find:

Three-quarters formal portrait of a standing Maori woman, with moko and wearing a flax cloak and greenstone earrings, in a studio setting with pillars and draped curtains Possibly painted from a photograph, or from life, in New Zealand (or England) The initials F.R.H.S. are likely to stand for Fellow of the Royal Hibernian Society, suggesting the artist was an Irishman. One suggested identity has been Waikaharu, only daughter of Hoani Taipua. However his daughter had no moko. A marriage was arranged between Hoani Taipua's son, Hori Ngawiti Pitiera, and a Ngapuhi woman, Ruiha, around the year 1896 and this could be a marriage portrait of Ruiha (who died relatively young of tuberculosis). Comparison with photographs owned by descendants makes it clear that this is not a portrait of Hoani Taipua's wife, Amokura, also known as Areta Hiria Mahau Ariki. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - H.V.Worth. F.R.H.S. 1896 [In red brushpoint] Quantity: 1 oil(s). Physical Description: Oil on canvas (storage frame) 1220 x 965 mm (sight) Provenance: Owned in 1985 by art dealer Mr W. A. Henderson of Auckland - see TL3/1/1 2 October 1985 and reply 25 October 1985. Offered at Christies, London, 29 October 1987, lot 144.
