Seated carte de visite portrait of Ropata Wahawaha, taken by Samuel Carnell of Napier. Rapata Wahawaha was born at either Te Puia or Akuaku in the Waiapu district. By his own account he was still a child when Christianity was introduced. If this refers to the East Coast district it suggests that he was born about 1820. He died at Gisborne on 1 July 1897, and was buried with full military honours on the rock fortress of Puputa in the Waiomatatini Valley. He was sometimes known as Ropata,...
