Description

These two Māori women, identified as Becky and Kino, lived in what was known as the Maoribank settlement across the Hutt River by the Maoribank (Whiteman’s) suspension bridge, now the southeast corner of Totara Park. Upper Hutt’s Māori population was decimated by a measles epidemic in 1857-1860 and by the time this image was taken fewer than 300 Māori lived in the entire Hutt Valley.
