One of New Zealand’s most enduring political institutions, the Kīngitanga (Māori King movement) was founded in 1858 with the aim of uniting Māori under a single sovereign. Waikato is the seat of the Kīngitanga. The early years of the reign of the second king, King Tāwhiao, were dominated by the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s.
