Click on the inset map to see the main areas for sealing in southern Australia and New Zealand. The sealing trade was a trans-Tasman pursuit, with sealers moving in rushes on the basis of a spectacular catch or rumour from Australia’s Bass Strait grounds to the south-west of New Zealand and the subantarctic islands. The large map shows that sealing operations close to mainland New Zealand were in Fiordland or around Foveaux Strait.
