- Description
A busy port developed at Kaiapoi after the town was established in the 1850s. The port (shown here towards the end of its life in the 1960s) was at the mouth of the Kaiapoi River. It became one of the busiest coastal ports in the country, with vessels carrying passengers and cargo to and from other parts of New Zealand. Moored along the riverbank are (from left) Ranginui, Paroto, Toa and Tuhoe. The Tuhoe now takes tourists up the river.
