Auckland’s One Tree Hill Domain and Cornwall Park function as one vast green space, though they are actually separate parks. One Tree Hill became a government domain in 1847, while Cornwall Park was gifted to the people of Auckland by businessman John Logan Campbell in 1901. This 1956 aerial photograph shows Māori fortifications on the volcanic hill. The buildings in the right middle distance are barracks built for the American army, which occupied the park during the Second World War.
