Description

5,000 people marched down Broadway in Palmerston North in May 1981 to protest against the impending Springbok rugby tour of New Zealand. The march was headed by the local MP, Joe Walding (centre, holding banner). Others under the banner included the Reverend David Penman of the Anglican All Saints Church, march organiser and Catholic bishop Peter Cullinan, and the Reverend Alan Webster, a Methodist. Ministers of many churches were active in the nationwide protests against the tour.
