This is a coloured print of an original drawing by Samuel Charles Brees entitled "The Upper Hutt District", which is the earliest known European illustration of the area. Brees was the Principal Engineer and Surveyor to the New Zealand Company from February 1842 to August 1844, and drew and painted many pictures of the Wellington area during his spare time. In 1843, accompanied by Te Kaeaea, he explored the South Wairarapa, travelling through the Upper Hutt district and over the Rimutakas. On...
