In 1991, 42-year old New Zealander Sandy Barwick became the first woman to finish the 1,300-mile (2,092-kilometre) Sri Chinmoy race in New York, then the world's longest certified foot race. Her six-day women’s world best of 549 miles (883.5 kilometres), set in 1990, was not broken until 2024. Barwick proved that women were capable of excelling in the most gruelling events.
