A schoolgirl plants a 'Kate Sheppard' camellia in a public garden in Hastings. There were many plantings of white camellias in 1993, as the white camellia flower was a symbol of the women's suffrage movement. In 1893 the suffragists had presented a white camellia flower to those members of the House of Representatives who had voted in favour of women gaining the vote.
