Otago’s first European settlers were whalers and sealers who arrived on the southern coast from the 1820s. Some of them remained in Otago after the whale fishery was exhausted in the early 1840s. They were on hand to greet the Scottish settlers, who arrived in 1848, and by their long association with local Maori helped smooth the path for the later arrivals.
