In December 1853 four Americans, including Freeman Cobb, commenced coaching in Victoria, Australia, under the name Cobb and Co. using American-designed Concord coaches. Affiliated proprietors also began using the Cobb and Co. name. With the outbreak of the gold rushes in Otago one Victorian coach proprietor, Charles Cole, saw an opportunity to set up in New Zealand. He chartered a ship, SS India, to take a coach, five wagons, a buggy, several carts and fifty-four horses to Otago
