Description

This anchor-stone according to Māori tradition, was used on the canoe which brought the first natives from Hawaiki. It has lain in the bed of the Mokau River for centuries, and a proposal was recently made that it should be placed in the Auckland Museum for safety. The photograph shows a party of Māori removing it to a place of safety of their own selection.
