Description

"Springfield", built in 1864, as the farm homestead of Scottish immigrant John Mathieson on the Otago peninsula. The co-operative movement in the New Zealand dairy industry began here in the 1870s. The kitchen wing where tubs of whey were heated for the cheesemaking process is facing just left of centre, and the stone-walled building which served as the original "factory" stretches to the rear of the homestead.
