View of William McLaughlin's house 'Puhi Nui', near Papatoetoe, ca 1865. In 1845 Thomas McLaughlin, a wealthy merchant from Peru, bought a 2786-acre tract of land in the northern part of the Clendon Grant. The property encompassed the low volcanic mountain known to the Maori as Matukutureia, but later commonly called McLaughlins Mountain, along with the southern reaches of the Puhinui Stream.
