Regarding their situation in Paihia, following the Battle of Kororareka, amidst the Northern War. Marianne comments that the others who fled, such as Mrs Brown and Mrs Dudley, seemed to take no notice of the conflict, while Pakaraka and Waimate had been destroyed by the armies of Hone Heke and Tamati Waka.
