On 30 September 1924 Moon Kow Shum paid a £100 poll tax when he arrived in New Zealand. Shum (Born at Ah Woo) was 33 years old when he arrived in Wellington on the 'Manuka'. The Chinese Immigrants Act 1881 imposed a £10 poll tax on all Chinese immigrants to NZ. It also imposed a tonnage restriction of one Chinese person to every 10 tons of car...
