Description

Portrait of four Maori men on board the naval gunboat H.M.S Pioneer. Te Wheoro is the only man identified in the photograph and is standing third from the left. The men are standing in front of one of the turrets from HMS Pioneer. The ship had two turrets which now are war memorials -one at Ngaruawahia and the other in Mercer. An engraving of this photograph appeared in the Illustrated London News vol. 45 XLV 1864 pg
