An oil painting 'The burning of the Boyd, Whangaroa, 1809' exhibited by Mr Walter Wright at the Auckland Society of Arts Exhibition and purchased for the Auckland City Council. The painting shows a group of Māori in canoes alongside the 'Boyd' anchored in Whangaroa Harbour. Māori killed most of the crew and passengers on the 'Boyd' in retaliation for the captain's mistreatment of a young local chief, Te Ara, who had sailed from Sydney on the 'Boyd'.
