Description

Wiping out a dirty heritage - the crusade against dirt and disease. 1. Row of six rotten old houses in Alexandra Street (now Airedale Street). These were condemned some years ago, but the order for demolition was made by the City Council only since the 'plague scare'. 2. 'The Doss House' a cheap boarding-house in Federal Street where seven old men - chiefly old age pensioners - slept all in one room about twelve feet square
