Photograph displayed with the caption: 'F241, originally named Ivanhoe. This engine did the ballasting and would be the first locomotive into Otahuhu. By courtesy of W.W. Stewart'. The reference is presumably to the engine's services during the construction of the Auckland to Mercer railway line prior to its opening in May 1875. The 'Ivanhoe' was originally used for carrying ballast to form the foundation of the tracks; thus it may have been, as the caption suggests, the first train to arrive...
