Artwork showing a version of Charles Goldie's and Louis Steele's 1899 painting 'The arrival of the Maoris in New Zealand'. The painting was modelled on Théodore Géricault’s 'The raft of the Medusa', which had been exhibited in Paris in 1819, three years after the Medusa, a French naval vessel, was wrecked off the coast of Senegal. The composition of Goldie and Steele's painting replicates Géricault’s original, including the impression of despair and starvation, which has been criticised as an...
