Description

I took half a dozen photographs of what I thought were black-billed gulls but on subsequent examination this is the only one where I feel confident of the identification. Others had paler legs and patches of other colours on the bill, which means they could well be juvenile red-billed gulls. The black-billed gull, or Buller's gull is endemic to New Zealand, mainly on the South Island, and is much rarer than the red-billed species. This one was photographed on the harbour wall at Queenstown.
