A black and white copy of an original photograph of Captain John Tall and George Rowles. Captain John Tall was born in the north of Kent, England, c1830, he was the son of navel officer Daniel tall and Harriet (née Goodwin). John married Eliza (née Shereby) in Melbourne c1861 and immigrated to New Zealand shortly after. He was appointed the position of Riverton's first harbour master by the provincial government in 1863.
