This is a Blackstone Rotary Washing Machine which we believe dates from 1905. Laundry work was always time-consuming and physically very hard work, and for many women was a recurring and onerous task. Clothes and domestic linen needed to be soaked, boiled and scrubbed, and this could take up an entire day.
