A trot down memory lane with images of horse jumping contests with 'lady riders' at A&P (Agricultural and Pastoral) Shows. Horse jumping began to be introduced to A&P Shows from the 1870s and lady riders became a spectacle. The earliest competitions involved the horse and rider jumping over one fence; and then competitions with several obstacles were introduced. Women would wear skirts and ride side saddle until it became more acceptable after 1900 to ride cross saddle wearing divided skirts and, later, breeches under a knee-length jacket.
Lady riders became a spectacle at Agricultural & Pastoral (A&P) Shows which introduced horse jumping from 1870s

'Leaping match' over one fence
The earliest competition was called a 'leaping match' where the horse and rider jumped over a single fence and the height would be raised until only one horse cleared it.

Jumping over several obstacles
Later, jumping over several obstacles were also held, including the 'Hunter's Jumping Competition' where hurdles had to be jumped cleanly within a set time, with faults added to the time taken. After World War I, the ‘Round-the-ring’ event also became popular where a series of jumps were placed near the outer edge of the show ring and each rider's and horse's ability and style were judged to determine the winner.

'Show jumping' & 'Show hunter' competitions over obstacles since 1950
After the New Zealand Horse Society (now Equestrian Sports New Zealand) was founded in 1950, the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) guidelines were adopted. Nowadays, popular events include: 'Show jumping' where 11 obstacles are to be jumped in a clear round or penalties are incurred; and 'Show hunter' where a horse's technical abilities over a course with 8-10 obstacles are judged.
