The new Ewen Gateway gave a new, improved access to the city replacing the first Ewen Bridge (1929) with the second Ewen Bridge and also realigning and reinforcing the adjacent riverbanks. The new (7th) bridge was constructed between January 1993 and May 1995. On 22 March, use of the new bridge commenced allowing demolition of the 6th bridge, river flood control work and riverbank landscaping to proceed.
