Dark coloured eruption amidst barren eroded hills On the back of the photograph is stamped "Weekly News 22 Jun 1922, 2 Sep 1931, Used" Waimangu was the largest geyser in New Zealand. It began erupting in 1900. The eruptions would vary between heights of 150m and 450m. Activity ceased in November 1904 when a landslide altered the local water table
