PTERODACTYL (Wing Finger). From "The Story of Creation."—This unbenevolentlooking reptile had huge bat-Like wings, partly supported by the enormously extended fifth finger. The race of the Pterodactyls was iun a long time before man appeared on earth, happily for us, for this vale of tears would have been a distinctly less comfortable place shared with winged neighbours of this sirt holering over our heads. Some binds of Pterodactyls are said to have had an expanse of wing of nearly 25ft; others were no larger than crows." They xvere probably shore-haunters, preying on both land and water animals. The small drawing is a "restoration" of what this grisly, airship-like leptde looked like in life and health. Happily we have inherited its bones only. (Otago Witness, 23 March 1904)
