THE SINKING OF FOUR STEAMERS AT PORT ARTHUR BY JAPANESE TO BLOCK THE ENTRANCE. Admiral Togo's report of the attempt on March. 27 to bottle up Port Arthur:—"When the four steamers laden with stones and explosives -were within three knots of the harbour mouth the forts and torpedoers opened a terrific fire, but the vesse.s and their escorts continued to advance, The steamer Chivo Mara anchored, blew up, and foundered towards Golden Hill. The Eukui Maru went further, intending to anchor, but was torpedoed to starboard and sank. The Yakibo Maru anchored to the left of the Fukui Maru, and sank herself. The Koneyama Maru passed between the Chiyo Maru and the Fukui Maru, in ths centre of the channel, but,was torpedoed and sank. The attempt was valiantly executed by the same volunteers as before under a, storm of shot and shell. Unfortunately, the space between the Yakibo Maru and Koneyama Maru allows of the passage of vessels. The torpedo boats. Aotaka and Bubame went a knot into the entrance of the harbour and had a fierce engagement with the Russian destroyers. The Japaiese losses were 13 killed and eight wounded.'
