Description

This small and rather unprepossessing object is one of Te Papa's most valuable treasures - a fossil iguanodontid tooth with a worn crown. It is one of the first fossils ever to be recognised as dinosaur and its discovery marked the beginning of dinosaur studies. Found by Mary Ann Mantell or her husband Gideon Mantell (or acquired from quarrymen) in September 1820 at a quarry near Cuckfield in Sussex, England, it is 132 to 137 million years old.
