Yellow triptych brings together many of the elements that characterised Ralph Hotere’s artistic practice: the colour black, the contrast between light and dark, and the cross motif. Hotere grew up in a Catholic Māori community in rural Northland. But though his works often incorporate Christian iconography, they resist a narrowly religious interpretation.
