The Main Body of the NZEF This view of Wellington Harbour, from hill behind Durham Street, shows the Japanese and New Zealand troopships in the harbour and Matiu Somes Island in the distance. The New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) sailed from Wellington to Europe in October 1914 on vessels acquisitioned from the Union Steam Ship Company, the New Zealand Shipping Company and others. They were escorted by HMS Minotaur and the Japanese cruiser, Ibuki.
