Reviews recent research that shows that young children are interested in content knowledge and able to learn it. Discusses research on early childhood teachers' subject content knowledge. Argues that in order to extend early childhood learning and respond to children's prior content knowledge more attention is needed to content within teaching and the subject content knowledge of teachers. Looks at implications for early childhood teaching practice and teachers' professional development.
