The fourth-year medical student relates his experience as a volunteer research assistant at the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit (SRMU), a field station of the Mahidol-Oxford University Tropical Medicine Research Unit established in 1986 on the Thai-Burmese border for the investigation and treatment of malaria and the provision of medical care to Karen refugees from Burma.
